GenZ is a Citizen Media Project about Media Freedoms.
GenZ is about young people and their views on the media, and the freedoms media may provide – or restrict.
Young voices tend to be ignored, or at best, drowned out by the stories and agendas that institutions consider to be important and worthy of being featured on ‘the media’ – as news, or opinion content pieces. What we used to consider to be ‘the media’ has changed radically because of the Internet, social platforms and the disruptive technologies we use in everyday life. While ‘media freedom’ continues to be associated with the work of journalists reporting freely as an indicator of ‘democracy’, in practice mainstream media – once the owners of print, TV and radio media platforms – now have to co-exist with information that filters in from sources that rely on user-generated content from citizen media.
Through this platform you may contribute content about the media we use in our everyday lives. How media may contribute to increased freedoms within our society. Or how media is now disconnected from what used to be called ‘the fourth estate’.
We want to start a discussion on media freedoms by listening to young people – as opposed to those with ready access to institutional soapboxes.
Listening does not come easy, particularly when there are generational divides. GenZ.mt is an attempt to change the state of play by showcasing the ideas, solutions – or even questions – that young people have on media freedoms. We also want to raise awareness on the need for greater digital and media literacy skills. These are critical 21st century skills if young voices are to be heard on matters that impact their present and their future prospects.
Consider this site as your advocacy platform. A citizen media platform for young people interested in answering many of the questions and contradictions about media freedoms during turbulent times.
