Why media matters- GenZ Project Malta

Why media matters

The media is not all it appears to be.

If you’re born after 1995, the chances are that you consider yourself to be a digital native. What used to be called ‘media’ has changed radically during your lifetime because of the internet, social platforms and the disruptive technologies we use in everyday life.

Yet the information we continue to secure from media – whatever it has become – continues to exert significant influence on what we think, what we believe, and how we act as citizens. Media influence is more important than ever.

Why media freedom matters - GenZ Malta project

Why media freedom matters

Many people believe that one of the reasons we use media is to provide us with news and facts.

Yet we’re in a world where distinguishing between a truth and untruth has become challenging.  Terms like ‘fake news’ have now become the norm, whether the news is actually real or not.

It’s difficult to determine, with the sheer speed and volume of online news, whether our connected world helps us become better informed, or whether we’re just stuck to our screens and to people in our echo chamber, who believe what we believe.

Why GenZ Malta project matters

Why this project matters

GenZ asks young people to share their views on the media, and the freedoms they may provide – or restrict.

It has been started up by organisations with an interest in media freedoms, but it is exclusively about providing an outlet for new opinions, and trying to get these heard in places that matter.

You are asked to submit content. No subject is off limits – although that does not mean that all submissions will be showcased. We have a set of simple terms and conditions that we would like you to follow.
